It’s quite unusual for concept designs to become reality but Honda have announced the new 2017 Civic Type R, and it’s pretty close!
The previous 2.0 litre Turbocharged four cylinder remains, albeit with some tweaks to increase bhp by 10 – this takes it to a total of 316bhp, edging ahead of a VW Golf R but still behind the Ford Focus RS by almost 30 bhp.
It remains front wheel drive, but Honda state the outright performance market is not where they are at.The Type R lineup has always had an exceptional gearbox however, and this is still the case.
Torsional rigidity is up by 38 per cent over the old model, plus you get independent multi-link rear suspensions as opposed to a torsion beam system of old. The new suspension is claimed to offer “improved stability and drivability”.
The previous model was noted to be lacking in the audio department, so Honda have taken appropriate steps – sound proofing improvements taking place inside the cabin and sound improvements and note quality to the exhaust music.
Honda also state all the aero flaps and lines are functional and necessary, not just making it a ricers wet dream.
In comes an additional driving mode too – Sport, which sits between comfort mode and unusable on the road R+ mode.
