F1 Qualifying 2016 Changes

The FIA has unanimously voted in favor of a brand new qualifying format for the 2016 Formula One season, following a slowest driver elminated system.

Qualifying Session 1:

  • Session will be 16 minutes long
  • 7 minutes in, the slowest driver is eliminated
  • Then every 90 seconds the slowest driver is eliminated
  • 7 drivers eliminated

Qualifying Session 2:

  • Session will be 15 minutes long
  • 6 minutes in, the slowest driver is eliminated
  • Then every 90 seconds the slowest driver is eliminated
  • 7 drivers eliminated

Qualifying Session 3:

  • Final session will last 14 minutes
  • 5 minutes in, the slowest driver is eliminated
  • Then every 90 seconds the slowest driver is eliminated until 2 remain
  • The final 90 seconds will be a battle between 2 drivers for pole position

It will be interesting to see how the new format pans out, I can see mass crowding and some surprise results at the beginning due to the faster drivers not being able to find track space. How well this new format is managed and presented to the viewers at home, time will tell. I wonder how drivers will be eliminated, I have strange visions of a crane picking up a car as it is eliminated.

Looking forward to the season start in 2016. The first race will be in Austrailia on the 18th-20th March.
